Position Overview
We're looking for an experienced Communications Manager to develop and execute an external communications strategy that amplifies ROOST’s mission and work and builds meaningful engagement with our global audiences. From individual developers to tech journalists to government leaders, ROOST work is relevant to a diverse audience with a range of reasons to care about Trust and Safety, and differing levels of familiarity with the open source philosophy behind ROOST’s approach. Ideal candidates will thrive in a distributed and collaborative environment, and be comfortable navigating high ambiguity.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and lead a cohesive communications strategy
Evolve existing messaging frameworks and communication priorities into a cohesive communications strategy for the organization, encompassing social media, coordinated campaigns, public relations, project launches, and performance metrics
Develop a distinct voice and tone for ROOST that captures its founding spirit and roll this voice and tone out across materials
Own the planning and execution of the strategy, including delegating to vendors as appropriate
Identify key external placement opportunities
Identify key opportunities for ROOST to share its work and develop new partnerships, such as media exclusives and events
Partner with ROOST leadership team to engage with government and public sector stakeholders
Support ROOST community engagement goals and partner management
Support the ROOST team in segmenting and creating engagement strategies for the different community members interested in ROOST. This includes bringing bigger picture strategy to the team as well as guiding day-to-day execution decisions like tooling and automation
Own communication plans for key launch moments
Own the end-to-end plan for landing great project launches, including working with partner PR and comms teams, coordinating media outreach, and analyzing reception post-launch
Create scalable solutions for a small team with big goals
Bring strong organization and creativity to the team, creating ways to automate and scale messaging work, create data-driven comms goals, and activate the community of ROOST partner teams to spread our message
Qualifications
Must-Have
5+ years of experience in communications in tech, ideally supporting Trust and Safety teams or technology initiatives
Proven track record of translating complex and technical issues into compelling, widely digestible narratives
Experience developing and executing media outreach, including fostering journalist and media outlet relationships and owning engagements from pitch-to-publish
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Nice-to-Have
Familiarity with open source technologies and the language of open source
Prior experience in startups, nonprofits, and or small team environments
Compensation and structure
This role is a 6 month, part-time contract with the possibility to extend. We are also open to hearing from communication firms who wish to pitch this work.
ROOST is a remote organization with global flexibility; this role will be expected to work a majority of hours overlapping with North American time zones.
ROOST aims to offer competitive compensation based on candidates’ experience and their regional market.
